"How are you, really?" If you are worried, it is okay to ask plainly: "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking does not put the idea in someone's head. It tells them they can talk to you.
Let them talk. You do not need to solve anything. "That sounds really hard. I'm glad you told me" is enough.
If they are thinking about suicide, stay with them if you can, and help keep dangerous items out of reach.
Call or text 988 together (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, US, 24/7), or text HOME to 741741. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
Text them tomorrow. And the day after. Small check-ins matter more than one big conversation.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. It is based on widely shared suicide prevention guidance such as the #BeThe1To steps. Behind You Co. is a clothing company, not a crisis service.
